Russia’s defense minister has announced a plan to develop land-based intermediate-range missiles that were banned under a nuclear arms treaty that Russia and the United States intend to abandon.
Sergei Shoigu said on Tuesday that ground versions of Kalibr cruise missiles and hypersonic missiles will be developed this year and in 2020.
The Kalibr was used in military operations in Syria. Russia says its hypersonic weapons can breach the US missile defense system.
Shoigu’s announcement came after the US notified Russia last Saturday that it will withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.
In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin said his country will also suspend its obligations under the treaty.
Moscow alleges that Washington has been developing intermediate-range missiles in violation of the treaty.
Putin warned on Saturday that if the US deploys such missiles in Europe and elsewhere, Russia will do the same.
