The Central Bureau of Investigation CBI has taken over investigation into the alleged abuse of minor girls at a shelter home in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district.

The case relates to mental, physical and sexual exploitation of girls residing at Balika Grih, Muzaffarpur. The CBI has booked officers and employees of the shelter home.

Bihar government had on Thursday handed over the investigation into the alleged sexual assault to the CBI.

The matter had come to light earlier this year when the Bihar Social Welfare Department filed an FIR based on a social audit of the shelter home conducted by a Mumbai-based institute.

The audit report stated that many girls at the shelter home had complained of sexual abuse. A special investigation team was formed to probe the complaints.

Following pressure from different quarters including opposition parties, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had recommended a CBI inquiry into alleged sexual exploitation of minor girls at a state funded shelter home in Muzaffarpur district.

“Government is committed to an impartial inquiry into incident”, said Kumar

He said that decision was taken to handover the case to CBI to prevent rumour mongering in the state. Earlier, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has categorically said the centre is ready for taking up the matter for a CBI probe.

Opposition parties including RJD and Congress had raised the issue in assembly. In assembly opposition leaders raised slogans against Nitish government. Opposion leader Tejaswi Prasad Yadav demanded resignation of Nitish Kumar taking moral responsibility for alleged sexual exploitation of 29 minor girls as he holds the home portfolio.

He alleged that police are not revealing the names of political leaders of the ruling parties who allegedly made telephone calls to the investigating officers and tried to influence the case of investigation.
