Malaysians will go to the polls tomorrow in the country’s 14th general election in which Prime Minister Najib Razak is pitted against his one-time mentor former premier Mahathir Mohamad.

A record 2,333 candidates have filed nomination papers to contest 222 parliamentary and 505 assembly seats in 12 states. A 13th state, Sarawak, has already held its election.

The main players include the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, which is expected to win by a narrow margin, and opposition parties Pakatan Harapan, a coalition led by Mahathir, who has come out of political retirement, as well as Parti Islam Se-Malaysia.
