Two policemen were killed after a militant attacked a police party accompanying a group of detenues at SMHS hospital in Srinagar today.
DIG Central Kashmir Ghulam Hassan Bhat told Greater Kashmir that a militant opened fire on a police party accompanying a group of around seven detenues for medical check-up at the hospital.
The cordon and search operation has been launched within hospital and nearby areas to nab the terrorist. More details are awaited.
Bhat said that one of the detenues, identified as militant Naveed Jat alias Abu Hanzullah from Pakistan, who was arrested in 2014, managed to flee.
He said that red alert has been sounded in Srinagar and the area cordoned off to nab him and the assailant.
The deceased policeman was identified as constable Mushtaq Ahmad.
Later, the second policeman, identified as Babar Ahmad of Shangas Anantnag, also succumbed, taking the toll to two.

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti has grieved over the killings of two policemen in a shootout at SMHS hospital in Srinagar, even as her predecessor and opposition leader Omar Abdullah also expressed his grief over the twin killings.
The two took to social networking site, Twitter to condole the twin killings. Mehbooba wrote on Twitter: “Pained to hear that two more brave policemen lost their lives in an attack in Srinagar today. My heart goes out to their families and loved ones”.
Omar also in his Twitter condolence message wrote:“Two J&K policemen killed by terrorists inside Srinagar’s premier hospital. Heartfelt condolences to the families of Constables Mushtaq & Babar”
