A boiler explosion in the NLC India Ltd power plant at Neyveli killed six people this morning in Tamil Nadu. 16 others were injured in the incident. The freak accident happened in the sixth unit of the 210 Megawatt power plant. Those who sustained severe burns were rushed to a corporate hospital in Chennai.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswamy and several other leaders have conveyed condolences over the deaths. The state government has announced a solarium of three lakh rupees each to the families of those who died in the incident. Grievously injured will be given one lakh rupees and those who sustained minor injuries fifty thousand rupees each. The plant management is also expected to announce a compensation package soon.

NLC India Ltd is a Navratna public sector enterprise under the Union Coal Ministry. In May this year, a blast in the NLC India Ltd plant led to the death of four people. Within two months, a more fatal explosion has rocked the premises.

It is being said that after servicing, the boiler was about to be restarted when the mishap occurred. The boiler blast has led to the suspension of the chief general manager and the head of the power unit where the accident occurred. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswamy and assured all help.
