Nearly 150 students were hospitalized after gas leakage near a school in South Delhi’s Tughlakabad this morning. Students of Government run Rani Jhansi Girls School have been taken to a nearby hospital for medical aid. Students complained of irritation in eyes and throat.

“Some students complained of irritation in the eyes & throat due to the gas leak,” said a teacher

Police and ambulances have reached the spot and are trying to find out the cause of the leak.

Classes were underway in the Delhi school when the gas leak took place in Tughlakabad. Students complained for irritation in the eyes and throat before they were taken to the hospital.

The gas leak was reported from a container depot next to Rani Jhansi Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Tughlakabad area. The school is located in Railway Colony.

National Disaster Response Force or NDRF officials reached the location to control the leak. The gas that leaked is Chloromethyl Pyridine, a chemical used in manufacturing insecticides and pesticides.

Students were taken to three nearby hospitals. A few parents took their children back to the hospital out of concern even after they were released.

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia orders a magisterial probe and said the students were fine. “I spoke to doctors who told me that they are normal,” Sisodia, who also holds the education portfolio, said. “There was an exam in the school which we have cancelled following the incident,” the deputy CM said.
