Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal today informed the Rajya Sabha that 359 vacancies of Judges are lying vacant in different high courts of the country. In a written reply, he said five thousand 238 vacancies are also vacant in District and Subordinate Courts across India. Mr Meghwal said every effort is made to fill up the existing vacancies expeditiously.

The Minister said the filing up of vacant positions in the District Courts of the country is the responsibility of the High Courts and State Governments.

Replying to another question, Mr Meghwal said 24 proposals recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium for appointment of High Court Judges, are under various stages of processing.
