At least 32 people were killed and over 120 injured in Nangarhar province yesterday following a devastating suicide bomb attack on protesters who were calling for the dismissal of a police commander.

According to Attaullah Khogyani, the spokesman for the governor of Nangarhar, the protesters in Momand Dara had gathered to demand the dismissal of a police commander, Bilal Pacha, whom they accused of involvement in arbitrary killings, robberies and maintaining a private prison.

The spokesperson said a suicide bomber approached the crowded tent where the protesters had gathered and detonated his explosive vest. No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

Nangarhar has been a stronghold of a local affiliate of the Islamic State militant group for the past 3 years.
The province has seen frequent terror attacks that hit so-called soft targets, where many people gather.

Elections for the lower house of parliament are slated for October, but there are growing doubts that they will be held as planned.
