WASHINGTON: Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has made a strong pitch for correcting the imbalance in flow of students between the US and India. He said at the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars in Washington he said the flow of students between the two nations is very high though this is largely in favour of the US.
According to an official press release, there were 3,146 American students in India in 2008 and around 100,000 Indian students in the US. Mukherjee said he wanted more students to come to India for study and there is immense scope for building academic interaction between the two nations.
Finance Minister asserted that there is a need to conclude the stalled Doha negotiations soon. The multilateral trade talks launched in Qatar’s capital Doha in Nov 2001 hit a roadblock in the Jul 2008 Geneva mini-ministerial meet following a disagreement between countries over protecting poor farmers from import surges. The talks are aimed at boosting global trade by reducing trade barriers.
