Delhi IAS coaching centre owner, coordinator arrested after death of 3 students

The owner and the coordinator of Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar were arrested on Sunday after three students died in their coaching centre due to flooding in the basement.

The bodies of two female students and a male student were retrieved from the site in the early hours of Sunday. Abhishek Gupta, the owner, and Deshpal Singh, the coordinator, have been booked under charges of culpable homicide and negligence.

Three civil services aspirants have lost their lives after the basement of a building housing a coaching centre was flooded in central Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar area yesterday. DCP Central M Harshavardhan said, two females and a male have died in the incident and their bodies have been sent for the legal postmortem examination. He said, work is continuously underway to pump out the water. 

A case has been registered and the investigation is underway. Delhi Fire Department said, a call was received at around 7 pm yesterday about the basement of the coaching institute being flooded and some people were trapped in it. 

“We have registered an FIR at Rajinder Nagar Police Station under sections 105 (culpable homicide), 106(1) (death of any person by doing any rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide), 115(2) (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 290 (negligent conduct with respect to pulling down, repairing or constructing buildings) and 35 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation. So far we have detained two people — owner and coordinator of the coaching centre,” Deputy Commissioner of Police M Harsha Vardhan said.

The victims have been identified as Tania Soni (25), Shreya Yadav (25), and Nevin Dalwin (28).

While Shreya was from Ambedkar Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni was from Telangana and Navin Dalwin from Kerala’s Ernakulam.

Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi ordered action against all coaching centres in the city which are operating from the basement of buildings. She said such coaching centres are in violation of building bye-laws and are not as per norms.
