At least 28 people have been killed and 329 injured in a huge explosion in the centre of the Afghanistan capital Kabul. Police said, a suicide attacker detonated a vehicle and gunmen stormed the area.
A heavy bomb blast shook a central district in Kabul, near the US embassy and government ministries. The Afghan health ministry said, at least 28 people died and 300 were wounded in the explosion.
The gunfight is now over and the area has been cleared, officials said. A Taliban spokesman said the group carried out the attack. Today’s bombing happened during the morning rush hour in Pul-e-Mahmud, a busy neighbourhood, close to the Ministry of Defence, other ministries and military compounds.
It comes a week after Taliban said it was launching its spring offensive, warning of large-scale attacks. Soldiers and security officers are among the casualties, but the majority are civilians, reports say. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed their fighters had managed to enter the offices of the National Directorate of Security, the main spy agency.
