The death toll today due to the typhoon that pummeled central and southern Vietnam rose to 27.Typhoon Damrey made landfall yesterday with winds of up to 90 kilometre per hour that damaged more than 40,000 homes, knocked down electricity poles and uprooted trees.

The country’s Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention said 27 people were now counted dead and 22 were missing.

It said 626 houses had collapsed entirely and more than 30,000 people have been evacuated. Heavy rain and high winds lashed the coastal strip today.

The storm moved from the coastal area into a key coffee-growing area of the world’s biggest producer of robusta coffee beans.

Many of the dead were killed by collapsing houses or washed away in flooding, according to the provincial disaster agency, the Sky News reported on Sunday.

The storm comes just days before the country welcomes world leaders for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference.
