At least 17 people were killed and 21 sustained injuries when a State Transport Corporation bus carrying them fell into a deep gorge in Almora district in Uttarakhand on Saturday.

The bus carrying 38 passengers fell into a deep gorge near Dhyadi in Bhanoli tehsil.

The search and rescue operation was immediately launched by local police and administration.

The injured were rushed to the nearest Primary Health Centre, Dhauladevi, whereas the seriously injured were referred to Haldwani and Almora based hospitals.

The bus was on its way from Munsyari to Delhi.

Chief Minister Harish Rawat has expressed grief over the accident.

He has announced exgratia grant of Rs 1 lakh each to the next of the kin of the deceased and Rs 50 thousand each for the seriously injured passengers from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

A magisterial enquiry has been ordered leading to the cause of the accident.
