At least 12 eight people, including a three month old baby and seven women were killed while 17 others were injured when a four-storey building collapsed in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar region Tuesday morning.

BUILDING COLLAPSEMumbai’s Fire Brigade is carrying out its search and rescue operation on a war footing as 20-25 people are still believed to be trapped under the concrete rubble.

The four-storey residential building called Sai Apartment was located near Shreyas cinema on the busy LBS road in Ghatkopar. It had a nursing home on ground floor and about 20 families stayed on the top four floors.

Mumbai’s Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar and civic chief Ajoy Mehta visited the accident site this afternoon to oversee the rescue and rehabilitation process.

While Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai are yet to ascertain the cause of collapse; locals have alleged that the renovation work being conducted by the nursing home owner might be the reason for the collapse. The building was not listed in the dangerous category.

Meanwhile, the police have detained one Sunil Shitap, said to be the owner of the nursing home on the ground floor of the building.
