All the 10 Army personnel including a JCO trapped under a mass of snow after a massive avalanche struck their high-altitude military post yesterday in Siachen Glacier were today presumed  dead.

The deadly avalanche hit the post situated at 19,600 feet in Northern Glacier sector in Ladakh region yesterday. One JCO and nine jawans were trapped. Defence PRO said blocks of snow had fallen on the post, burying it very deep.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has termed the demise of the soldiers as very tragic. In a tweet, Mr Modi saluted the brave soldiers who gave their lives to the nation.

Mr Modi also expressed his condolences to the families of the Soldiers. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has also condoled the death.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar also condoled the death of the soldiers. “My heartfelt condolences to the near and dear ones of our brave soldiers who were martyred in the line of duty in the most difficult terrain of Siachen,” he said in Delhi.

The Minister said it is the duty of the country to take care of their families.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi also expressed shock and deep distress on the confirmation of the demise of the ten Army personnel.
