In a major relief to the Ansal brothers, convicts in the 1997 Uphaar fire tragedy, the Supreme Court on Wednesday said that they will not be sent to the jail. However, the apex court imposed a fine of 60 crores rupees on them.

The amount has to be paid in next three months. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 10 lakhs on the concerned fire officer.

In its ruling, the apex court said the amount will be paid to Delhi government, which will decide what has to be done with the money.

The real estate barons – Gopal and Sushil Ansal were convicted in 2014.

Fifty-nine people, trapped in the balcony of the theatre, died of asphyxia following the fire and over 100 were injured in subsequent stampede on June 13, 1997 during the screening of Bollywood film “Border”.
