India today reiterated its readiness and commitment to help Myanmar in addressing issues related to Rakhine State.

During her two-day visit to the country, the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj welcomed Myanmar’s commitment to implement the Rakhine Advisory Commission’s recommendations.

She noted that under the aegis of the bilateral Rakhine State Development Programme, India is already in the implementation stages of various projects that will respond to the needs of the Rakhine State population.

The first major project is the construction of prefabricated housing for displaced persons in Rakhine state. The Minister also underlined the need for safe, speedy and sustainable return of displaced persons to Rakhine State.

During the visit, the External Affairs Minister called on President of Myanmar U Win Myint and met, State Counsellor and Minister for Foreign Affairs Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

During the bilateral meetings, boundary and border-related issues, peace and security matters, India’s development assistance to Myanmar, ongoing projects, and other issues of mutual interest were discussed. Seven Agreements/MOUs were signed during the visit.
