The Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that making change in the Indian Constitution would be suicidal. “No one can think of changing the Constitution. If they do, I believe it is like suicide”, said PM while intervening in the discussion on Commitment to India’s Constitution as part of the 125th Birth Anniversary celebrations of Dr B R Ambedkar in the Lok Sabha today.

PM statement came in the backdrop of demand of debate on reservation policy of the country and the secular character of the nation. “Our focus must be on how our Constitution can help the Dalits, the marginalised and the poor”, PM said.

Mr Modi has said Indian Constitution was a binding force in a diverse country. Mr Narendra Modi said, nobody could undermine the contribution of previous governments in the development of the nation. Mr Modi said, the Indian Constitution is about dignity for Indians and unity for India.

He said, no praise is enough for the persons who created the Constitution and nobody can ever deny Dr. B R Ambedkar’s contribution in framing the Constitution. He said, Ambedkar witnessed so much yet there was no bitterness in him and it did not reflect in the Constitution as well. Mr Modi said, the importance and sanctity of the Constitution should be propagated among the people to strengthen democracy.

The Prime Minister said, the Government has only one religion which is India First and the Indian Constitution is about dignity for Indians and unity for India. Mr Modi also stressed the need for working more through consensus than majority and minority in a democracy.

He said, consensus is more important than majority rule and having majority in the House does not mean one should impose their views. Mr Modi said, nobody can undermine the contribution on of previous governments in the development of the nation. He also said, nobody can ever deny Dr. B R Ambedkar’s contribution in framing the Constitution.

He said, Dr Ambedkar faced so much bitterness during his life but it did not reflect in the Constitution of which he was the main architect. Mr Modi said, the importance and sanctity of the Constitution should be propagated among the people to strengthen democracy.

Spelling out his government’s priorities about upliftment of vulnerable and poor sections of the society, Mr Modi said, the government will soon bring a bill to enhance the ceiling of bonus from 3500 to 7000 rupees to the labourers. The Prime Minister appreciated the efforts of Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan saying her address will always be remembered.
