US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have reaffirmed that their countries will cooperate to realize the denuclearization of North Korea.

The two leaders spoke by phone for over an hour on Friday.

Putin reportedly briefed Trump on his first meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in April.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Trump stressed the importance of continuing to pressure the North with sanctions.

According to Russia’s presidential office, Putin said sanctions should be eased as reciprocal steps for Pyongyang fulfilling its obligations.

The two leaders also discussed Venezuela. Trump told reporters that Putin “is not looking to get involved.”

However, the Kremlin said Putin stressed to Trump that interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs undermines the prospects for a political resolution to the crisis.
