PM launches ‘India Handloom’ brand; Calls for new marketing strategy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched the first National Handloom brand at a function in Chennai. He said that date 7th August has been chosen due to its special significance in India’s history; it was on this day that the Swadeshi Movement was launched in 1905.
Modi said this day has special significance for handlooms. Handloom is eco friendly and India is home to several handloom products.

He said that the use of Khadi products has registered an increase of 60 percent after his appeal during the Mann Ki Baat Program through Radio.

Mr. Modi sought greater use of handloom in people’s daily lives. Stating that fashion and design education in India also needs to be re-oriented, he said the handloom sector has inherent strengths that we need to market.

Prime Minister also emphasised on innovative initiatives for making handlooms as fashionable choice among consumers. He said the handloom sector has to win the trust of customers with new innovative quality products. Prime Minister emphasized that we need to popularize this among our youth, adding that it will give the much-needed boost to the handloom sector.

He said India is home to several world famous handloom products. Stressing the importance of the India Handloom brand for securing a place at the global market, the Prime Minister said that if the use of handlooms is increased to a just five percent, it would fetch a 33 percent enhanced revenue to the Handloom weavers.Urging film industry to popularise handlooms, handicrafts and khadi sector, he mentioned that in ancient times also concepts like ‘supply chain management’, ‘cluster development’ and ‘raw material supply’ were popular.

He said that the use of Khadi products has registered an increase of 60 percent after his appeal during the Mann Ki Baat Program through Radio.Prime Minister emphasised on increase use of technology and e-commerce for marketing of handloom products. He mentioned that handloom is a labour intensive sector where increased use of technology should be encouraged.

The Prime Minister visited the exhibition of handloom products from various states kept for display at the University Auditorium and gave away prizes to outstanding weavers. He arrived in Chennai on a day’s visit. Mr Modi was received at the airport by Governor K Rosaiah and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, among others.

Mr. Modi had a 15-minute meeting with Jayalalithaa at the airport. This is the Prime Minister’s first visit to the Tamil Nadu capital since he assumed office. Besides inaugurating the Handloom day, the Prime Minister also presented Sant Kabir awards and National Awards for handloom weavers on the occasion.
