IS seize last govt-controlled border crossing between Syria-Iraq

Islamic State militants have reportedly seized the last government-controlled border crossing between Syria and Iraq. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, government forces withdrew from the al-Tanf crossing in Homs as IS fighters advanced. The loss of al-Tanf to IS follows the group’s takeover of the ancient city of Palmyra yesterday.

Meanwhile, in yet another setback to President Bashar al-Assad, insurgents today seized a hospital from Syrian government forces who had been besieged there since late April.

The al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front, one of the insurgent groups involved in the offensive, said in a Twitter feed. This report is also attributed to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. There was no comment from Syrian officials yet.

Islamic State now controls more than 95,000 square kilometers of Syria, which is 50 per cent of the country’s entire territory.
