Delhi plants one million saplings

With untiring efforts of the Department of Environment and Forests alongwith other Govt. Departments and agencies and RWAs, school children, market associations, NGOs and individuals 10,28,000 saplings have already been planted.

Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit described this as a resounding and marvelous achievement which will go a long way in making Delhi greener city without any air-pollution.  The trees have been absorbing polluting gases and providing an ambience conducive to the healthy living.  Mrs Dikshit stated this while initiating a plantation drive of one lakh saplings of species indigenous to ridge at Asola Wildlife Sanctuary over an area of hundred hectare of degraded forest.  She further stated that this is yet another endeavour of the forest department and eco task force to increase the forest land tree cover in Delhi.  Local MLA Balram Tanwar, Secretary Environment Keshav Chandara, DG Forests Govt. P.J. Dalip Kumar, ADG NCC, CEO ETF, Conservator of Forests Govt. of Delhi and large number of NCC cadets and members of territorial army were present on this occasion.

Speaking on this occasion, Mrs. Sheila Dikshit stated that the large scale plantation in the ridge would not only improve water regime, habitat of wildlife of the area but also play a significant role in mitigating the effects of climate change and global warming.  She added that appropriate soil and water conservation measures have been taken to improve the water regime of the area by constructing 8 check dams, laying of contour trenches and closing the areas for grazing for inducing natural regeneration and root stocks of native species to come up.  The Department has also decided to redevelop four existing water bodies in Asola and five in Bhatti area for providing much needed water for sustenance of wildlife and avifauna as also maintenance of the plantation being raised.  She complemented the role of eco-task force in greening the difficult and rocky area of Bhatti mines.

With development of green area in Asola Wildlife Sanctuary the entire stretch from Bhatti Mines to Asola will become a composite forest comprising green tree area.  The selection of 46 species of trees and 15 species of bamboos has been carefully made.  The native species being planted include Dhakbutea, White Kikar, Pasendu, Khirni, Dhau, Khejri, Gondni, Anjan, Mahua and Kheri which disappeared from the ridge due to excessive biotic interference.
