Delhi: Onion prices skyrocket to Rs 80/kg

(Last Updated On: 21/08/2015)

Prices of Onion have sky rocketed in Delhi with kitchen staple selling at 80 rupees per kilogram in the retail market. According to Delhi Agriculture Marketing Board, Onion arrival in Azadpur Mandi was 11,493 quintal. The maximum wholesale price quoted by the Board was about 49 rupees per kilogram and minimum 20 rupees.

State-run MMTC has invited global bids for import of 10 thousand tonnes onion from countries like Pakistan, Egypt, China and Afghanistan to boost domestic supply and check price rise. The Bids should be submitted by August 27th and will remain valid up to September 2nd.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government has formed teams to monitor the stock of Onion in the wholesale markets and check its hoarding. But, the wholesale market predictions say that the retail prices of onion may shoot up in Delhi after the arrival of its fresh stock from other states as the wholesale price there has itself gone up.

According to the government, teams of Food and Civil Supplies Department have been continuously monitoring the supply and prices of onions in the national capital. Officers have been directed to keep a strict watch on the Fair Price Shops and Mobile Vans, engaged in retail sale of onions, to ensure that they sell Onion at 30 rupees per kg.
