India’s Vice President Hamid Ansari today said, the Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has ordered a thorough probe into the killing of an Indian fisherman allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy.
Mr Ansari had a bilateral meeting with Mr Sirisena in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, on the sidelines of the Summit of Indian Ocean Rim Association. Mr. Ansari, informed media persons that the Sri Lankan President had spoken to the Chief of Navy and has ordered full investigation into the matter.
Earlier Political parties and fishermen associations in Tamil Nadu have condemned the killing of Rameswaram fisherman by Sri Lankan Navy. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappady K Palaniswamy has condemned the incident and announced 5 lakh rupees compensation to the fisherman’s family. Union Minister of state Pon Radhakrishnan, DMK working president MK Stalin and PMK leader Dr Ramdoss have condemned the incident.

There is shock and disbelief in fishermen hamlets of Tamil Nadu as Sri Lankan Navy has mercilessly shot dead 22 year old fisherman Bridgo when he was fishing near Kachatheevu. The family members are shattered as their bread winner was killed. Sri Lankan Navy attacking Tamil fishermen and apprehending them is a routine affair. But Lankan Navy firing at unarmed fishermen who were fishing in traditional zones has created panic and anger among locals.
DMK working president MK Stalin has demanded Rs 25 lakhs and PMK leader Ramadass Rs one crore compensation for the family of the fisherman. Sri Lankan Navy has shot dead an Indian fisherman after five years since a fisherman from Karaikal was killed in 2011 April. Fishermen associations in Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai and Nagai have announced strike condemning the incident. The fishermen urged central government to intervene and secure the release of 85 Tamil fishermen lodged in Lankan jail and their 128 fishing boats.
