In the US Open Tennis, 31 year old world number one Rafael Nadal of Spain has advanced to the semi-finals after beating Russian teen Andrey Rublev in the quarter finals of men’s singles. He will face Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro who stunned five time champions Roger Federer 7-5, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 in the quarters. It will be the 6th US Open semi-final for Nadal and 26th at the majors while Del Potro will be playing in just his 4th last four match at the Grand Slams.
Meanwhile, for the first time since 1981, the US Open women’s semi-finals will be an all-American affair with seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams and three first-Slam-title hopefuls in the mix. No matter who advances, it will set up the first all-American US Open final since 2002, when Williams lost to younger sister Serena.
The women’s doubles quarterfinal match of India’s Sania Mirza and her Chinese partner Shuai Peng match against the 5th seeded duo of Hungary’s Timea Babos and her Czech partner Aandrea Hlavackova was postponed last night due to rain. The match was suspended at 2-2 and later postponed for today.
