SYRIYA: Death toll rises to 72 in suspected chemical attack

syria-bombingThe death toll in yesterday’s suspected chemical weapons attack on a rebel-held Syrian province of Idlib has risen to 72. Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, 20 children and 17 women were among those killed and the toll could rise further.

Syria has denied its forces caused the deaths, with Russia, which supports the government, also saying that it had not carried out any airstrikes.

The United Nations Security Council is to hold an emergency meeting today to discuss the attack. The meeting has been convened by France and UK as international outrage mounted over the attack.

United Nations’ Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura said, it was a horrific attack and that there should be a clear identification of responsibilities and accountability for it.
