President exhorts people to shun communalism for united India

Anwarul Hoda / Patna

President Pranab Mukherjee today exhorted people to shun communalism, separatism and parochialism for making a strong and united India.

Addressing the centenary celebration of Mahatma Gandhi’s Champaran Satyagraha here today, the President urged people to overcome all sorts of prejudices.

Mr Mukherjee said, the country has achieved Independence after great sacrifice of our freedom fighters and it cannot be forgotten. The President said, Mahatma Gandhi had always fought for all sections of the society and he started satyagraha against the barbaric atrocities on Indigo farmers in Champaran.

He said, the Champaran Satygraha is unparallel in the history of freedom movement as this struggle had transformed a barrister in South Africa to Mahatma Gandhi. Mr. Mukherjee said, the dream of developed India can be fulfilled only after poverty alleviation.

In his address, Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind said, Mahatma Gandhi’s thoughts are still relevant today. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said, all places related to Mahatma Gandhi in Bihar will be developed.

He said, the state government will spread views of Gandhi ji among people of the state. RJD Chief Lalu Prasad and Congress Vice- President Rahul Gandhi also spoke on this occasion.
