Local people in the Asalat Nagar Bagha in Maenather police station some 20 KM from Main city started protest after they heard the some policemen had shown disrespect to Quran and misbehaved with women.
On Tuesday night, a police team had gone to arrest a man wanted in a case of molestation. Later, the women of the family alleged that the cops had made obscene comments.
Moradabad Range IG MK Bashal said a mob of over 200 people gathered on the Moradabad-Agra Road and blocked the road. When the police tried to clear the blockade, the agitators threw stones at them. The outnumbered cops fled, leaving behind a jeep which the people set on fire.
DIG Ashok Kumar Singh rushed to the spot, along with reinforcement, including PAC personnel. The agitators again started brickbatting in which the DIG was injured on the head. He was admitted to a local hospital.
The police used lathis to disperse the mob. Over a dozen policemen were injured in the brick-batting, and 26 persons arrested, IG Bashal said. He said SP (Rural) Baboo Ram had been asked to conduct an inquiry into the allegation against the policemen.
The IG said that a minor girl of Asalatpur Bagha village had lodged a complaint of molestation against a youth. A police team went to the house of the accused and since he was not there, they started misbehaving with people at home including women.
Mulayam, Azharuddin detained
MORADABAD: (AMN) Samajwadi party president Mulayam Singh Yadav and congress MP from Moradabad Azharuddin have been arrested by the UP police on Thursday. They were arrested while going to Asalat Nagar Bagha village where Muslim had clashed with police on Wednesday following desecration of Quran by some police men.
Police said that the leaders have been arrested as section 144 is imposed in the area. Meanwhile Mulayam singh has claimed that police have arrested him illegally. He said that Mayawati government i s was trying to scuttle the voice of opposition
