PAC quizzes Anil Ambani, others in 2G scam

in connection with alleged irregularities in the 2G spectrum allocation.

Etisalat DB Telecom CEO Atul Jham was also questioned by the panel headed by senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi.

Anil Ambani reportedly told the PAC that it’s tough for him to answer any questions on the 2G spectrum scam since the matter is now sub-judice and is being heard by the Supreme Court.

Mr Ambani’s  Reliance Telecom is one of the companies listed for financial irregularities in the chargesheet filed last week by the CBI , which is investigating the scam.

Gautam Doshi, the Managing Director of Mr Ambais’ parent company, the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) has been accused for conspiracy an abetment of cheating along with two other ADAG executives.

They have been accused of setting up Swan Telecom as a front to acquire more spectrum than was legally permissible in 2008 from A Raja, who was then Telecom Minister and is now in jail.

The PAC had on Monday quizzed Tata Sons Chairman Ratan Tata and corporate lobbyist Niira Radia in connection with the 2G spectrum scam.

S-Tel CEO Shamik Das and Unitech Wireless Managing Director Sigve Brekke are also scheduled to appear before the PAC later in the day.

Briefing the media, the Chairman of the PAC, Dr Murli Manohar Joshi said, Ambani was frank in his answers except on a couple of questions, where he referred to being named in the CBI chargesheet in the Supreme Court.

Mr. Joshi said, Atul Jhamb of Etisalat, Vinod Goenka of DB Telecom , S-Tel Representative Mr Srinivasan, Sanjay Chandra of Unitech and Charles Woodworth of Telenor were also questioned extensively regarding spectrum allocation and related matters.

Mr Joshi said, as pointed out by the Comptroller and Auditor General in its report, all these companies were not eligible for licenses as there were several irregularities at different stages. He said, the modus operandi of all these companies was almost the same and they committed similar mistakes in getting the spectrum by changing the Memorandum of Association. Dr Joshi said, the representatives of Telenor gave the most vocal and direct answers to the queries of the members.
