New Zealand halts all new offshore oil, gas exploration

Petrol-PriceNew Zealand has halted all new offshore oil and gas exploration as part of its efforts to deal with climate change.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern today said, the government has taken an important step to address climate change and create a clean, green and sustainable future for the country.

The oil and gas industry in New Zealand generates about 1.8 billion US dollar a year and employs about 11 thousand people.

Environmental groups welcomed the move with Greenpeace describing it as as a landmark moment in the transition to a clean-energy economy.
