Mutual respect and protection are barometer of Human Rights: CJI

JUSTICE DEEPAK MISHRAChief Justice of India Justice Dipak Misra has said that sincerity inheres mutual respect and protection and it is the barometer of Human Rights.

Addressing the 24th foundation day of National Human Rights Commission in New Delhi Thursday, Justice Misra stressed the need for spreading awareness of human rights.

He said, unless a person is aware of his or her rights how can he or she seek protection of rights. He said, Right to Privacy is also a human right.

Quoting Kautilya, Chief Justice Misra said, education is also a right and inalienable. He said, according to Kautilya it was the King’s duty to punish parents who don’t send their children to Pathshala.

In his address, Chairman NHRC, Justice H L Dattu said, human rights can be realized by all only if freedom, justice and equity are made fundamental way of life. He said, the number of complaint being received by the Commission has witnessed phenomenal increase.

He said, the Human rights body disposed of 1.6 lakh cases last year. It also recommended financial relief to victims of human rights violation to the tune of 11.32 crore rupees.

The rights body was established on the 12th of October, 1993 under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.
