The proactive support, he added, of all the citizens is essential. He appealed the Administrative Heads of all Government and Autonomous Bodies Offices, Educational Institutions, Commercial Establishments, Market Associations as well as citizens to initiate suitable steps to prevent mosquito breeding.
The Commissioner informed that despite various measures taken to seek community participation by the local body breeding has been detected in 18844 houses for which Health Department has issued 23753 legal notices and challan has been issued against 969 persons. Central Cross Checking Teams of MCD, NIMR and National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme have reported high Aedes mosquito breeding indices from various institutions viz.
IIT Campus, NIHFW, JNU Campus, Police Stations, offices and educational institutions & localities namely Netaji Nagar, Prithviraj Road, Kusumpur Pahari huts, Pratap Vihar Phase-II, Nithari Village, JJ Colony Uttam Nagar, Tulsi Ram colony, Nangal Raya, Indra Park, Mangolpuri Phase-I, Sadar Bazar Delhi Cantt, Transport Authority Sheikh Sarai, Shaheen Bagh, E-block Prashant Vihar, Railway Colony Punjabi Bagh, Raj Nagar and Palam areas of Nazafgarh Zone.
The commissioner warned that MCD will launch a special checking and prosecution drive from next week. Persons/Institutions will be prosecuted under Delhi Municipal Corporation (Malaria & other Vector Borne Diseases) Bye-laws, 1975, for creating mosquitogenic conditions and failure to take specified preventive measures, if breeding is detected. Mr. Mehra emphasized that due attention be paid to the work places alongwith residential areas. Public co-operation is solicited to help in controlling the breeding of Aedes mosquito. Effective control of the disease is not possible unless suitable steps are taken simultaneously in residential areas and in office/commercial complexes to prevent, mosquito breeding.
Municipal Commissioner has advised all the citizens to take following preventive measures to curb mosquito breeding: All coolers should be cleaned once a week and mopped dry before use. Temephos granules should be put in all those coolers that cannot be emptied. These granules are available free of cost at all Malaria offices/Circles of MCD. Overhead tanks “haudies” and other water containers should be kept covered with properly fitting lid. Stagnant water should not be allowed to be accumulated inside or around work place/office premises. Empty containers, drums, pots and old tyres etc. should not be left in the open pending disposal. Disposable plastic/paper cups, glasses and other articles should be disposed off in dustbins regularly.
