Maharashtra Politics rocks Parliament; both Houses adjourned

Volatile Political situation in Maharashtra today rocked proceedings in both Houses of Parliament leading to adjournment. Lok Sabha was first adjourned till 12 PM and later till 2 PM. Rajya Sabha has also been adjourned till 2 PM.

In Lok Sabha, when House met for the day, Opposition parties led by Congress trooped to the well raising slogans and displaying placards against the NDA government over government formation and role of Governor in Maharashtra. Speaker Om Birla objected to the raising of banner by some Congress members and repeatedly asked them to withdraw from the House but they continued their protest. Later, Mr Birla called marshals to take the members holding the banner out. This resulted in a minor scuffle. The Speaker tried to run the Question Hour amid uproar and called Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to question. He responded by saying it is futile as democracy has been muzzled in Maharashtra. As noisy scenes continued, the Speaker adjourned the House till 12 PM. When House met at noon, it was adjourned till 2 PM.

In the Rajya Sabha, members from Congress, Left and others had given adjournment motion over the issue which was disallowed by Chairman Venkaiah Naidu. Mr Naidu said, the House cannot discuss any matter which is subjudice. He also cited previous rulings of the House that the decision of governor cannot be discussed without substantive motion. Following this, Opposition members started sloganeering from their seats.

Amid noisy scenes, Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, the people of Maharashtra had given mandate to BJP but Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress are trying to form the government by hook and crook.
