Freedom fighter and educationist, Madan Mohan Malviya was conferred the highest civilian award of the country Bharat Ratna posthumously at a glittering function today in the Durbar hall of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. His family members received the award from President Pranab Mukherjee.
Madan Mohan Malviya is fondly remembered for his initiative for establishing institutions that reinforced the cultural identity of the country. He was a moving force behind the establishment of Banaras Hindu University. The credit for popularising the slogan of Satyameva Jayate also goes to him.
In the function, senior BJP leader L K Advani, Akali Dal leader and Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and Jagadguru Rambhadra Acharya received Padma Vibhushan. Swapan Dasgupata, David Frawley , Harish Salve, Shri Satpal received Padma Bhusan . Noted film maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, physician Dr Randeep Guleria, Writer Prasoon Joshi, Prof Alka Kripalni were among others who received Padma Shri.
