India, Kyrgyzstan agree to strengthen bilateral, defence ties

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi in a restricted meeting with the President of Kyrgyz Republic, Mr. Almazbek Atambayev, at Ala-Archa State Residence, in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on July 12, 2015.Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ​Kyrgyz ​President Almazbek Atamba​y​ev exchanged views on strengthening bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues here Sunday.​

Voicing grave concern over rising trend of extremism and terrorism worldwide, the two countries signed four agreements including one to boost defence cooperation and hold annual joint military exercises. They also agreed to expeditiously consider signing an agreement on combating international terrorism and other crimes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in Bishkek last night as part of his eight-day six-nation tour to Central Asia, emphasised the need to combat terrorism and extremism which he described as a threat without borders. Addressing a joint press meet along with President Almazbek Atambayev after their talks, Mr. Modi said, they both sought a peaceful and secure neighbourhood at a time of challenges in the region.

Highlighting the ties ​spread ​over centuries​, Prime Minister said that it​ creates a special kind of​ ​closeness and goodwill that adds a lot of charm and interest to ​his present visit. Kyrgystan and India are also united by the bonds of shared democratic values​, Mr. Modi said​.​ Talking about the important place ​of ​Central Asia in India’s future​, he said that we can reinforce each other’s economic progress.

Earlier, Prime Minister gifted hightech medical equipments worth of 260 thousand dollars to the Kyrgyzstan as a part of India’s defence cooperation with the country.
