On Sept 14, nearly 90 people were arrested in Chennai after a group of several hundred Muslim protesters threw stones and smashed windows at the US consulate, demonstrating against the American anti-Islam film that has sparked similar outbursts worldwide.

The protesters were mostly activists of a Muslim party Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam.

US and Israeli flags along with the effigies of US President Barack Obama were set on fire at dozens of places by Muslim protesters on Friday in Kashmir.

The United Nations human rights chief Friday urged religious and political leaders to do their utmost to restore calm in the wake of an anti-Islam film that has sparked protests in countries across the world.

“The film is malicious and deliberately provocative and portrays a disgracefully distorted image of Muslims. I fully understand why people wish to protest strongly against it, and it is their right to do so peacefully,” the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, said.
