CoP-11: India needs to protect biodiversity from hazards of GM crops

NEW DELHI: India will now face the challenge of not only ensuring protection against the hazards of genetically modified (GM) crops at home but also across the globe as it is slated to assume of the Presidency of the 11th Conference of Parties (CoP-11) to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) early next month.

367 lakh hectare area covered under cultivation of rice

Over 367 lakh hectare area has been covered under the cultivation of rice so far in various parts of the country. According to the data released by the Agriculture Ministry, the sown area is about 4 lakh hectare more than the total covered area for rice cultivation in the last weak.

RICE SOWN 33.55 LAKH HECTARE MORE THAN LAST YEAR

NEW DELHI: (AMN) Rice has been sown in 376.77 lakh hectare as on today (September 16). As per data received from States, It represents an increase of 33.55 lakh hectare over last year’s acreage on this date. Higher area coverage has been reported from West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.  

1003 more banks opened in rural areas

NEW DELHI: 1003 bank branches have been opened in rural areas of the country during 2010-11. These branches were opened by Scheduled Commercial Banks during 2010-11 in rural areas with population less than 10,000.
