Govt to move 65 mn slum dewllers to decent houses

Government has said that construction of over 28 lakh affordable houses for economically weaker sections, low and middle income groups has been approved so far under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban).

This was stated by Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri at a function on World Habitat Day -2017 in New Delhi Thursday.

He said, the Yojana has been designed to ensure that every single individual has a house with access to water, sanitation and pucca roads. He also said, over 65 million peoples are living in slums and government is trying to move them into decent houses in the next 5 years.

Mr Puri said, government has taken several initiatives to give a boost to housing sector and in particular to affordable housing to meet the housing needs of the people.

The Minister said, integrated and holistic approach to housing will help in ending poverty and achieving inclusive urban prosperity for all.
