Senior journalist and Rising Kashmir editor Shujaat Bukhari and his personal security officer (PSO) were shot dead by unknown attackers outside his office in Srinagar on Thursday evening.
According to reports Bukhari was attacked when he had just stepped out of his office at Press Colony in the city.
He had started his career as a young reporter with Kashmir Times and moved to The Hindu as its Kashmir correspondent in the 90s where his in-depth, analytical and objective reporting from the Valley got him recognition on the national and international level.
Later, he established his own English daily Rising Kashmir. He was also editor of Urdu daily Buland Kashmir and Kashmiri newspaper Sangramal
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has expressed shock over his death.
“Shocked & deeply saddened by the sudden demise of Shujaat Bukhari. The scourge of terror has reared its ugly head on the eve of Eid. I strongly condemn this act of mindless violence & pray for his soul to rest in peace. My deepest condolences to his family,” she said on Twitter.
The killing of @RisingKashmir editor, Shujaat Bukhari is an act of cowardice. It is an attempt to silence the saner voices of Kashmir. He was a courageous and fearless journalist. Extremely shocked & pained at his death. My thoughts and prayers are with his bereaved family.

Shujaat Bukhari and I were colleagues at The Hindu. He was a formidable reporter, and, as editor of Rising Kashmir, a powerful voice for the embattled media fraternity, a true voice of sanity and reason. No words of condemnation are enough for the scum who have assassinated him.
