Prof. Walia informed the delegates that the city government has implemented a number of schemes and programmes for the welfare of the women in Delhi. Detailing the programmes, Prof. Walia said that Department of Social Welfare has formulated a policy which addresses various concerns of women. She informed a number of drives and campaigns have been launched against alcoholism and substance abuse and have informed the masses about the ill effects of alcoholism and drug abuse.
Prof. Walia further informed that the Delhi Cabinet has approved setting up of 05 Fast Track Designated Courts for ensuring speedy justice to the rape victims. Informing about this, she said that she had written a letter to the Chief Justice, Delhi High Court urging him to set up 9 designated fast track courts one each in 9 districts of Delhi to ensure justice to the rape victims. Prof. Walia further informed that the Govt. of Delhi has appointed 17 Women Protection Officers to save the women from the domestic violence. These Women Protection Officers have been provided with the Cell phones so that they may immediately be contacted by the victims of the domestic violence.
Prof. Walia informed the delegates that the Govt. has set up 123 Gender Resource Centres (GRCs) under Samajhik Suvidha Sangam which are well catering the various needs of the women and extending the benefits of a number of schemes to the women in order to their empowerment.
Prof. Walia informed Delhi government will open 09 shelter homes for destitute and pregnant women one in each district in the Capital. Two such homes have already been opened one in Jahangir Puri and another in Sarai Rohilla. 07 more such shelters will be opened soon by the Department of Women & Child Development to give shelter to such homeless, destitute and pregnant women.
