Cold wave hits North India


NEW DELHI: Cold conditions continued to prevail in most parts of North India particularly Punjab and Haryana on Sunday even though the minimum temperature rose between 2-3 degrees, with Narnaul being the coldest place in the two states at a minimum of 4.3 degrees Celsius.


Hisar, which had been braving intense chill, registered a low of 7.1 deg C, up by a degree, while Narnaul, which had on Saturday registered a low of 2.5 degrees today recorded a minimum of 4.3 deg C, the MeT department said in Chandigarh.


Gurgaon recorded a low of 7 deg C, a degree above normal while the low at Karnal settled at 8.4 deg C.


Ambala recorded a minimum temperature of 7.7 deg C, up by a degree while the low at Rohtak settled at 7.1 deg C.


Chandigarh registered a low of 8.5 deg C, up two degrees.


In Punjab, the minimum at Patiala rose to 9.4 deg C, three above normal while the low at Ludhiana settled at 7.2 deg C. However, Amritsar continued to brave the chill at 4.6 deg C.



The Met department said fog had lifted from most places in the region today, though misty conditions prevailed at some places. 

A cold wave also continued to affect normal life in parts of Rajasthan where the mercury plummeted sharply, with Churu in the plains recording a temperature of 4 degree Celsius whereas Mount Abu, the sole hill station in the state, settled at minus 2 degree Celsius.


Jodhpur and Dabok recorded minimum of 5.5 and 6 degree Celsius respectively while Barmer and Sriganganagar recorded night temperature of 6.4 degrees, a Met official said. 

 

Ajmer, Jaipur and Kota recorded low of 7.4, 8.2 and 10.4 degree Celsius respectively. The Met department predicted no respite from the biting cold in the coming days. DD
