Andhra boat tragedy: Death toll rises to 20

NDRF rescue

AMN / HYDERABAD

The death toll in yesterday’s boat tragedy in Krishna river at Ibrahimpatnam near Vijayawada has risen to 20 following the recovering of four more bodies this morning.

State disaster response and fire services department’s director general N Satyanarayana said while two bodies were recovered by teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), another was fished out by personnel of his department.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has ordered a thorough investigation in the mishap.

The boat was carrying over 35 passengers. Eyewitnesses said, 32 of the total passengers belonged to the Ongole Walkers Club who came on a pleasure trip. The boat left Punnami Ghat near Bhavanipuram at around 5:30 PM to Pavitra Sangamam of Krishna and Godavari rivers to watch Harathi at Ferry village.

Andhra Pradesh government has announced an exgratia of 5 lakh rupees each to the families of the deceased.
